Obverse 8

This die also features a misplaced 8 in the denticles below the date. This misplaced digit is different than the misplaced 8 found on the previous Obverse 7 (BF-11). This misplaced digit is slightly left of that previous misplaced digit of BF-11, and has a flatter-looking top.

The enlarged photo below shows the appearance of this particular variety. Note that the left curve downward begins halfway between the middle denticle and the denticle on its left.

Comments: This is an easy to attribute die marriage. This is the only use of this obverse die and the second and final use of this reverse die.

Scarcity: A fairly common die marriage. Rarity Rating: R-2.

Cross reference: This die marriage is the same as FS-20-1875S-301 from the Cherrypickers’ Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States Coins, Volume II.
