1875-S BF-4

Obverse 3

The right side of 1 in the date is under the shield point, and is the left-most date position of any of the obverse dies for the 1875-S. There is a diagonal line across a denticles below the 5.

Date to the far left

There is a curved die scratch in the denticles, beginning left of star 2, curving upward toward the field before it ends between stars 2 and 3. It is not as sharp as in BF-3 due to die wear.

Date Position: M 1.0, 0.50 mm

Reverse C

This reverse has a mintmark that is positioned moderately high.

Mintmark position

There is a die scratch in the eagle’s upper left wing (to the viewer’s right). It should be fairly easy to see even in moderately circulated examples (see both photos below).

Comments: All coins seen to date have a slight die rotation of 12 degrees and weakness in the letters of UNITED STATES and CENTS. This is the second and final use of this obverse die and the only use of this reverse die.

Scarcity: A very scarce die pairing, you will look a while for this one. Rarity Rating: R-4.
