There is a triangular die chip below the hand, on the left side of the pole.

Horizontal raised die polish marks, some heavy, can be seen under LIBERTY on the shield.

A die break is seen inside the eagle's beak.

The mintmark shows evidence of re-punching or is otherwise partially filled.

Some of the eagle's feathers were polished off the die on both sides of the chest.

Comments: This is the first use of this obverse die. It was also used for the 1875-S Special strike (SP) coins, later used on circulation strikes paired with two different reverse dies. This is the only known use of this reverse die.

Scarcity: There are at least two known examples of this die pairing. Mid-American Auction's FUN 1987 sale had a second example in addition to the Roy Rauch coin featured here. There may be a third example out there, requiring more study. Rarity rating: R-7+.
